Luminance Legal AI Review: Pricing and Contract Workflows
Caitlin Price, Social Media & Content Marketer•Published
Luminance legal AI combines contract negotiation, repository analysis, and approval workflows through Negotiate, Discover, and Automate. Its scope extends across legal, procurement, and sales, so evaluating it means looking beyond clause review to the processes your team needs to run. Pricing requires a quote for the products and usage you need.
GC AI is enterprise legal AI software for in-house counsel, trusted by 2,100+ legal teams, including Arc’teryx, SKIMS, TIME, Riot Games and Snyk. Our Contract Intelligence and Research connect findings across agreements to the lawyer’s next task: checking the legal position and preparing advice or proposed language.
What Does Luminance Do?
Luminance uses an organization’s contracts, playbooks, and negotiation history across three areas:
| Product Area | Capabilities | Legal Team’s Use |
|---|---|---|
| Negotiate | Playbook checks, precedent, fallback language, and suggested markups, including work in Microsoft Word. | Review incoming paper against company positions and prepare changes for counsel’s approval. |
| Discover | Repository questions, linked agreements and amendments, and visibility into obligations, renewals, and exposure. | Find the contract terms that affect a renewal or portfolio decision. |
| Automate | Contract intake, routing, approvals, and progression toward signature. | Move recurring requests through the company’s intake and approval process. |
Negotiate: Apply Playbooks and Precedent in Word
Luminance’s Negotiate can suggest edits against playbooks and precedent in Word. The buyer test is whether those edits remain traceable to the approved position for the deal. A clause can resemble a precedent while allocating risk differently, so a useful redline should explain the departure and the playbook instruction behind the proposed change.
Discover: Find Obligations and Renewals Across Contracts
For Discover, the buyer test is whether answers about obligations, renewals, and commercial terms reflect the agreement family that governs now. Inspect how it handles conflicting dates or a missing referenced document. A renewal date without the relevant notice requirement may be insufficient for the business owner deciding whether to renew.
Automate: Route Intake and Approvals
For Automate, the buyer test is whether intake and approval workflows preserve the right permissions, exceptions, and audit trail.
For an exception request, the useful output is an agreement the receiving team can use and a record of who approved the departure. Establish who can change an approved template, authorize an exception, and send the agreement for signature.
Integrations and Legal Research: Confirm the Exact Scope
Luminance lists Microsoft Word, Outlook, DocuSign, and LexisNexis integrations. Check the specific action you need: editing in Word is different from synchronizing an executed agreement to a repository. Your IT team should test permissions, document updates, and sync failures in the proposed configuration.
The announced LexisNexis integration is designed to bring citation-backed research together with contract history and internal playbooks. Its stated U.S. scope includes case law, statutes, and precedent, with access to deeper research through Protégé. Confirm which functions are included and available in the subscription offered to you, any required LexisNexis access, and how counsel inspects the authorities.
Implementation: Start With Your Documents and Your Problem
Luminance offers a guided two-week trial using your contracts and business questions. A trial can establish evidence of fit; it does not establish how long production rollout will take.
Define responsibilities before the trial: your legal team owns the review standard, legal operations maps the handoffs, and IT and security check access and document connections. Separate vendor services from your team’s work on document preparation, playbook configuration, and training.
On CZ and Friends, GC AI’s podcast for in-house legal leaders, Jenna Hunt, then Head of Legal Operations at Tipalti, explained why legal teams should define the problem before choosing new technology. She emphasized assessing existing data and checking other teams’ technology plans.
In the same episode, Hunt described what GC AI adoption looked like at Tipalti:
It didn't even feel like an implementation. It was just an on switch.
For your own rollout, agree on who will prepare the documents, train users, and provide support before signing.
Security and Data Use: Read the Terms Alongside the Controls
Luminance’s security controls include ISO 27001 certification, regular SOC 2 Type II examinations, encryption, access controls, independent penetration testing, and customer-specific learning that remains private to each organization.
The applicable contract matters too. The public Master Agreement makes Private Learning and Outputs customer-owned and confidential. Luminance may retain and use pseudonymized Usage Insights indefinitely to develop or improve the product only if they contain no Customer Confidential Information or Personal Data and do not identify the customer.
The Master Agreement and AI Systems Terms also address generative features that use third-party model providers. When a customer uses such a feature, relevant inputs may be transmitted to the provider for processing. Ask which provisions apply to your configuration, what data each feature processes, and what you can disable. Your privacy and security reviewers should reconcile the answers with the order form, data processing terms, retention requirements, and hosting region.
How Much Does Luminance Cost?
Luminance requires a commercial quote for your configuration. Its Master Agreement places fees in the Product Order Form, and its AWS Marketplace listing offers private pricing tied to contract duration and document volume. These materials do not publish a standard per-user subscription price.
Ask for the products, users, document allowances, implementation services, integrations, and renewal terms in the quote. The current Luminance Glossary treats each file version as a separate Document. Have the order form explain how that definition affects your allowance when you upload redlines, amendments, and replacement files.
Compare the full cost of the workflow your team needs, including your team’s setup and maintenance work and any separate subscriptions. For the GC AI workflow below, Contract Intelligence is a paid add-on, priced on document capacity. Include that capacity alongside the GC AI plan and support your team needs.
How Do GC AI and Luminance Compare?
We recommend GC AI when an in-house lawyer needs to turn contract findings into researched advice and proposed language. Our Contract Intelligence organizes agreements in a Vault, a workspace for a document set. Linking it to a Project, a workspace for related chats and materials, lets the Project’s chat query those agreements as counsel develops the advice.
Our co-founder Cecilia Ziniti, a three-time general counsel, used AI at Replit to draft demand letters and review agreements. She co-founded GC AI with Bardia Pourvakil in 2023 after seeing the gaps in general-purpose tools for lawyers. Her experience as an in-house lawyer helps explain our focus on checking the law, revising contract language, and advising the business.
Both platforms address contract analysis. The comparison should turn on the work your team needs to complete and the evidence counsel can inspect:
| Reader Priority | Luminance | Why We Recommend GC AI |
|---|---|---|
| Use findings across an agreement family | Discover links related agreements and amendments and provides source-backed answers. Negotiate applies playbooks and precedent. | Our Contract Intelligence combines family links with Current Terms review. A linked Project lets counsel use the agreements in the research and drafting assignment. |
| Research U.S. law | The LexisNexis integration is designed to combine contract context with cited U.S. legal insights. | Our US Case Law works in chat and Projects, with cited opinions opening in the full-text Opinion Reader. Team and Enterprise include access; Individual offers it as an add-on. |
| Support adoption | A guided two-week trial uses your contracts and business questions. Production services and support should be specified in the quote. | Our Team plan includes legal AI courses and Solutions Attorney support. Enterprise adds managed onboarding and change management. |
Analyzing contracts and managing the steps from a contract request to signature are different jobs. Luminance’s Automate covers intake, approval routing, and progression to signature. GC AI’s Contract Intelligence analyzes existing agreements and the terms that govern them; it does not manage that request-to-signature process. If your team needs approval and signature workflows, plan which system will handle them alongside GC AI.
Work Through an Amended Vendor Agreement With GC AI
Consider a vendor renewal with several amendments and a disputed limitation of liability. Prepare a sanitized agreement family, the governing U.S. jurisdiction, relevant business facts, and your approved negotiation position. Ask which liability cap applies and whether the proposed exception raises enforceability concerns under that jurisdiction’s law.
- Find and verify the terms: Bring the agreement family into our Contract Intelligence. Use Current Terms to review the terms across related documents, then open the cited passages. Confirm the relationships and resolve missing amendments before relying on the answer.
- Research the issue in context: Link the Vault to the Project containing your business question and approved position. Ask our Research to assess the cap and proposed exception, identify supporting authorities, and surface conflicting treatment. Research draws on sources including statutes, regulations, and agency guidance; US Case Law supplies U.S. federal and state court opinions.
- Make and document the decision: Open the cited authorities and check their applicability and current treatment. Separate legal enforceability from the business’s risk decision. Use the verified findings to draft a recommendation and proposed language, with unresolved questions made explicit. The responsible lawyer approves the position before it goes to the counterparty.
Linking a Project does not grant its members access to the Vault. Each user needs the relevant Vault access. Contract Intelligence also identifies references to hosted terms without automatically analyzing those web pages; upload a copy of the hosted terms to the Vault when they matter to the answer.

Evaluate GC AI on the Legal Work You Need to Deliver
Use that same amended-agreement packet, legal question, and instructions in each vendor’s proposed configuration. Compare the operative terms with your team’s known answer. Review the authorities, recommendation, and proposed language, recording missed issues, unsupported statements, and corrections counsel makes.
Bring that agreement packet, legal question, and any evaluation findings to a GC AI demo. Confirm the products and document capacity needed to complete the assignment, then judge the cost against the verified work product and remaining review effort. That gives your team a concrete basis for deciding whether GC AI fits its contract-to-advice work.
