CoCounsel Legal: When Westlaw and Practical Law Are Central
CoCounsel Legal’s buying case is strongest when your department depends on Thomson Reuters research and practice materials. The decision is what the proposed package adds to subscriptions your team holds and which existing costs it replaces.
CoCounsel Essentials and Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set with CoCounsel Essentials are narrower offerings. Ask for the included content and tools in writing so you compare the package your lawyers would use.
Then follow a research answer into Word. Inspect the supporting authority alongside the proposed contract language. A useful redline should implement counsel’s verified conclusion, including the conditions and exceptions that affect the deal.
Confirm the regional version too. Earlier U.K. and Canadian CoCounsel Legal offerings are distinct from the next-generation product made generally available in the U.S. in August 2026. Their names do not establish identical sources or features.
That source and subscription fit is CoCounsel’s main buying consideration. Vincent raises a related question: whether its jurisdiction coverage and connected document workflow match your matters.
Vincent by Clio: Match Coverage to Your Matters
Vincent Enterprise combines cited research, 50-state surveys, drafting, and document review. Its connections to iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint, and Google Drive are relevant when your team wants research to draw on documents in those systems.
Vincent’s 20+ jurisdictions and Clio Library’s 100+ countries measure different coverage. For a cross-border matter, confirm the sources available in each country you need, then test the same narrow question in each.
Legal Pad moves Vincent research into a side-by-side drafting workspace. It is in Live Beta, with Word and PDF export; final document styling may require a word processor.
Review Playbooks apply preferred, acceptable, and unacceptable team positions to contract review and can propose redlines. Clio for Word remains in beta for Vincent customers. Use a marked-up agreement to check comments, existing redlines, styles, and tracked changes in the workflow you would buy.
Vincent Enterprise’s documented evaluation route is a personalized demo and a possible structured trial arranged with its team. vLex also advertises a separate trial route, so confirm whether that offer covers your required Enterprise configuration. Clio Work’s pricing and trial terms belong to a separate product.
Published benchmarks can help you form evaluation questions, provided they measure the task you need.
What Do CoCounsel and Vincent Benchmarks Measure?
The February 2025 Vals Legal AI Report tested document tasks, including question answering, summarization, and redlining. It excluded legal-research results, which Vals reserved for a separate study.
Thomson Reuters submitted CoCounsel 2.0, and vendors participated in different task sets. Use those findings to shape your evaluation questions. They do not establish which current platform researches your legal issue better.
How to Compare CoCounsel and Vincent on In-House Work
Use a completed supplier-contract renewal as an illustrative pilot. Give each vendor the same permitted agreement, amendment, proposed renewal, approved negotiation positions, and short factual brief. Keep counsel’s resolved issue list separate as the answer key.
Suppose an amendment changes the supplier’s liability cap, while the renewal draft changes the indemnity carve-out. Ask each product to identify the operative language, explain the departure from your approved position, identify any governing-law question requiring research, and prepare a redline and business recommendation. Record which features and sources are enabled.
- Research: Use a familiar question in a jurisdiction your team needs. Check the controlling primary source, supporting passage, date, jurisdiction, negative treatment, contrary authority, and any important gap.
- Cross-jurisdiction question: Ask the same narrow question in each relevant jurisdiction. Record which sources the system searched and which it could not access.
- Contract review: Include known deviations, defined terms, and an amendment. Check whether the tool finds each issue, cites the right clause, follows your approved position, and identifies which language controls after the amendment.
- Work product: Request the same Word redline and short recommendation from each product. The recommendation should identify the operative clause, proposed change, approved fallback, and decision requiring escalation. Check that it agrees with the redline.
- Buying and governance: Confirm the plan, users, content licenses, beta access, integrations, retention terms, trial limits, implementation, and renewal price in writing.
Define material failures before the pilot: reliance on superseded language, a missed known issue, or authority that does not support the recommendation. Record these separately from wording and formatting fixes.
Measure counsel’s time through the approved redline and recommendation, including source checks and corrections. That shows how much work remains between the first answer and the advice your business colleagues can use.
Why GC AI Is Our Recommendation for Generalist In-House Work
A supplier renewal joins several jobs: reading the current agreement, researching a disputed term, applying your company’s position, and explaining the decision to procurement. Both CoCounsel and Vincent offer research and document tools. For a generalist in-house team, we recommend GC AI because our workflow connects those jobs to company guidance and the work product the business needs.
The same pilot makes that recommendation concrete. Use your permitted matter documents and approved positions in GC AI, then inspect the research, proposed changes, and unresolved decisions together.
Research the Legal Issue, Including International Law
Our Research workflow combines legal analysis with traceable sources. For a complex question, GC AI can run research agents in parallel, investigate different parts of the issue, and synthesize their findings into a cited answer.
Give the research the renewal documents, governing law, disputed provision, and factual context. Ask it to distinguish the legal question from your commercial preference and identify contrary authority or missing evidence. Counsel opens the material sources and decides how they apply before using the analysis.
Our International Law database adds case law and legislation from 30+ jurisdictions across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Specify the jurisdiction in your question and check the current coverage for case law, legislation, or both. Database citations open the source text for review; translations assist review but still need checking.
Team and Enterprise plans include one legal database of the organization’s choice, US Case Law or International Law, with both available through an add-on. Individual plans offer the databases as add-ons. For the pilot, confirm source availability in each jurisdiction your team needs; the jurisdiction count is a starting point.
Apply Your Company’s Positions in Word
Give our Playbook Builder Agent your existing playbook or negotiation guide. It develops checks with preferred positions, fallback language, and guidance from those materials. Counsel reviews the checks and resolves any questions about the company’s position before using them.
After confirming how the signed agreement and amendments affect the renewal, run the approved playbook against the working draft in GC AI for Word.
Specify whose paper you are reviewing, the company’s preferred liability cap, permitted fallback, and conditions requiring escalation. Inspect the findings and suggested redlines, then edit or reject changes that do not fit the transaction. Counsel decides whether the deal justifies an exception.
See our contract review and redlining workflow inside Microsoft Word:
Deliver the Recommendation and Keep Reviewed Guidance
Ask GC AI for a short recommendation to procurement stating the proposed change, acceptable fallback, unresolved issue, and approval needed. Compare it with the redline and the authorities you checked. Counsel approves the advice and language before the next negotiation.
When the matter reveals a useful new review check, save it only after counsel decides it should become a reusable company standard. Name an owner to maintain the position so the next renewal starts with current guidance.
Ritesh Patel, Chief Legal Officer at Viant Technology, describes the value of sources lawyers can inspect:
Having sources and links right there builds trust. You can check the law yourself, and that trust drives adoption across the team.
That is the standard for this workflow: verified authority, contract language consistent with the analysis, and a business decision that remains with counsel. Our guide to AI legal research tools compares the broader source options if your team needs a specialist research subscription alongside GC AI.
Evaluate GC AI on a Renewal Your Team Knows
Bring an agreement your team has negotiated and the playbook or negotiation guidance counsel used. Ask us to show which terms depart from your position, how the suggested redline addresses them, and what still needs your decision.
For a cross-border matter, include a legal question in a jurisdiction you need. Confirm database access, then compare the corrected redline and recommendation with your answer key and total quote. Keep any specialist authority your team still requires.
