Ironclad Legal AI Review [2026]
Caitlin Price, Social Media & Content Marketer•Published
Ironclad offers a contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform and AI products for drafting, review, research, and contract analysis. Its CLM is designed for teams that need intake, approvals, signatures, and a shared repository. Contract Review Agent (formerly Jurist), Ironclad Agent (formerly Ironclad Assistant), and AI Assist have different roles, so the evaluation should confirm which products, playbook services, and October 2026 transition terms apply to the proposed package.
If your contract process works today, focus the evaluation on the legal work that still needs support: checking the terms in force, researching a disputed clause, and preparing the next redline.
GC AI is enterprise legal AI software for in-house counsel, trusted by 2,200+ legal teams, including TIME, Riot Games, SKIMS, Snyk, and Lockheed Martin.
Our workspace combines cited legal research, contract review, drafting, and advice to the business. Our Playbooks apply approved positions, and GC AI for Word puts proposed edits in the agreement. Our Contract Intelligence connects agreements and amendments so counsel can check the source language supporting an answer.
Ironclad CLM: Intake, Approvals, and Contract Storage
Ironclad CLM gives legal and business teams one place to track a contract request. A requester submits information through an intake form. The workflow routes the agreement through review and approvals, then signature and repository archiving. With requests and reviews in one workflow, business teams and legal can see where the agreement stands and who needs to act next.
Its no-code Workflow Designer supports configurable processes, while the repository holds executed agreements and searchable contract data. Before launch, assign someone to maintain the intake fields, approval rules, templates, and contract data.
Ironclad's AI products serve several different parts of that process:
| Product | Role in the Workflow | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Contract Review Agent (formerly Jurist) | Legal drafting, editing, redlining, summarization, and research using playbooks and uploaded documents | Seats, standalone access, Word access, and the Jurist seat transition |
| Ironclad Agent (formerly Ironclad Assistant) | Questions and search across contract information | Repository coverage, permissions, and availability in your package |
| AI Assist | Optional AI assistance in the editor, including drafting, summarization, and redlining | Administrator enablement and how it overlaps with other purchased AI features |
| Specialized Agents | Tasks such as intake, archiving, contract-family grouping, and renewal analysis | Release status, eligible actions, and credit consumption |
Ask the Ironclad sales team to show the exact products in the proposed account. A demo that moves between several AI features should also show which ones appear on the order form.
Contract Review Agent Can Review Contracts and Conduct Legal Research
In Contract Review Agent, lawyers can upload documents, prompt against playbooks, and accept, reject, or revise suggested edits. Counsel should check which approved position drove each proposed redline before incorporating it.
Contract Review Agent offers legal research with citations and source links to cases, statutes, and regulatory guidance. Check which sources cover your jurisdictions and whether the cited authority supports the conclusion counsel needs.
For a research demo, bring a question your team has answered. Specify the jurisdiction, relevant date, and business facts. Open each cited source and compare the output with your known answer.
Record missing authority, incorrect citations, and reasoning that needs revision. The presence of a citation alone does not establish that the answer applies to the matter.
October 2026: What Changed in Ironclad AI
On October 8, 2026, Ironclad renamed Jurist to Contract Review Agent and Ironclad Assistant to Ironclad Agent. Existing Jurist users keep their review capabilities and permissions, now reached through Ironclad Agent, a workflow, or the Word add-in. Some help articles and order forms may still use the old names, so confirm which product each line item covers.
The same release added precedent-based redlining and a Playbook Agent, both in Early Access. Professional Services remains required for playbook creation and optimization before using Redlining with Playbooks; those services are not required for precedent-based redlining or other Contract Review Agent capabilities. Ironclad expects that setup requirement to change when Playbook Agent becomes generally available.
Contract Family Agent became generally available on October 8. It proposes parent-child relationships among agreements, statements of work, and amendments, with up to 150 contracts per entity and relationship type in a run. Uncertain relationships go to a human verification queue. Bulk runs across multiple entities remain a paid Early Access capability.
Ironclad Pricing: What the Custom Quote Must Include
Ironclad requires a custom quote; it does not publish standard pricing. Some integrations and services are add-ons, so budget the configured package and implementation work alongside the number and type of AI seats your reviewers need.
The FY2026 and FY2027 product descriptions both describe standalone Jurist seats, while the Jurist marketing FAQ describes the product as sold with CLM.
The FY2027 terms provide one administrator seat solely to manage standalone Jurist access; broader CLM use requires separate licenses and may incur fees. Existing Jurist seat arrangements continue through the current contract term, with migration timing tied to the customer's contract and pricing model. Ask which version governs your order form and have Ironclad specify standalone availability, CLM access, and October transition terms.
AI-credit arrangements include action-based usage and, for Contract Review Agent, subscription-based usage. Rates and transition details require confirmation with the account team. Ask for:
- The products and seat types needed for each user, including business requesters and administrators.
- AI credits: Confirm included credits, the actions that consume them, and what happens when the balance runs out.
- Implementation: Itemize services, contract migration, playbook setup, and training.
- Contract terms: Confirm integration and API entitlements, security options, support, and renewal terms.
Request a first-year total and the ongoing annual cost using your expected contract volume and users. Keep assumptions visible so procurement can compare a revised quote with the original scope.
GC AI’s Contract Intelligence is a separate paid add-on priced by document capacity.
What to Test During Implementation
Ironclad offers connections to Salesforce, Microsoft Word, cloud storage, and e-signature providers, while its developer platform supports workflow and repository operations. Test the system-to-system handoff you expect to use under the permissions and package you plan to buy.
For example, test a salesperson's request from Salesforce through legal approval and signature. Confirm which system owns each field, how updates flow back, and what happens when a document version changes. Ask an administrator to demonstrate the same process with a restricted user account.
For migration and rollout, use a small sample that includes a counterparty document, an agreement with unusual approval requirements, and a signed contract with amendments. Check imported documents, metadata, and permissions before expanding the rollout.
Before buying, request an export demonstration that separately shows bulk downloads of contract documents and attachments, record-metadata exports, and the available approval, turn, and workflow-action history. Confirm administrator access, file formats, scope, timing, assistance, and any charges in writing.
Security Review: Check the AI Settings and Terms
Ironclad’s security offering includes encryption, access controls, and SOC 2 Type II reporting. Your security team should review the current reports and the controls available in the environment you would deploy.
For AI, separate model-provider protections from Ironclad's own use of data. Ironclad's AI Addendum includes an administrator-controlled training setting. When enabled, it permits specified uses of customer data, inputs, and outputs for model improvement, subject to stated de-identification and aggregation safeguards. A later opt-out stops new training activities that were not underway at the time of opt-out.
The addendum also contains a separate license to use inputs and outputs to evaluate service performance and accuracy. Ask counsel to review the executed terms alongside the actual tenant settings, subprocessors, and retention arrangements. A statement about one provider or feature should not stand in for that review.
Government buyers should check which AI features and integrations are available in their deployment. Ironclad's separate government environment (NA2) has a different feature set from its commercial service. A commercial demo may not represent the features included in NA2.
Pilot Ironclad on a Contract Your Team Has Completed
A useful Ironclad pilot should test both the CLM workflow and the legal work your team needs the product to perform. We recommend this sequence:
- Choose a completed matter whose final terms and outcome your team knows. Include the original agreement, amendments, final negotiated language, and the approval history you expect to reproduce.
- Run the proposed intake and approval workflow. Have a business requester, reviewer, and administrator use their intended permissions.
- Ask the AI to review the contract against your playbook. Check whether it identifies a material deviation, preserves an acceptable clause, and explains each proposed revision.
- In the proposed Ironclad Agent package, ask a contract question affected by an amendment. Compare the answer and cited passage with the operative documents; confirm how the relevant agreements are connected and which access is included in your quote.
- Have counsel compare the AI's answer, cited passages, and proposed redlines with the signed documents and known outcome. Correct errors, finish the workflow, and record the manual work, configuration changes, and usage charges involved.
Set acceptance criteria before the demo. Useful measures include correct approval routing, source-supported answers, clean exports, and the time counsel spends correcting a first pass. Repeat difficult examples so one successful answer does not become the entire buying case.
Ironclad Legal AI vs. GC AI: Where Each Fits
Cecilia Ziniti, our co-founder and a three-time general counsel, described using early language models at Replit to draft demand letters and review agreements. She saw their usefulness and the gaps that remained for lawyers.
In 2023, she left Replit and co-founded GC AI with Bardia Pourvakil to build software for in-house legal work. That background helps explain our focus on counsel’s legal analysis and business advice, including work that continues alongside an established CLM.
Ironclad also offers research and review, so the relevant comparison is how each proposed product supports the legal work your team needs and what implementation it requires.

Ironclad vs. GC AI: Compare the Legal Workflows
Use a completed matter to compare how each proposed product supports research and playbook review. Confirm which Ironclad AI features are included in the quote.
| Reader Priority | Ironclad | Why We Recommend GC AI |
|---|---|---|
| Check U.S. legal authority | Contract Review Agent supports legal research with citations and source links to cases, statutes, and regulatory guidance. | Our Research provides cited analysis, and US Case Law includes an Opinion Reader for inspecting full decisions. Use a known question to test whether counsel can verify the relevant authority. |
| Maintain review positions and draft redlines | Contract Review Agent can redline against playbooks. Ironclad currently requires Professional Services for playbook creation and optimization before using Redlining with Playbooks. | Our Playbooks help counsel build and revise review standards, which they can apply in GC AI for Word. We recommend this workflow when counsel needs to refine positions and approve revisions in the document. |

Our Team plan includes legal AI courses, a product walkthrough, and Solutions Attorney support.
A Supplier-Renewal Example
A supplier renewal with an amendment creates a concrete test: identify the controlling terms, research the disputed clause, and prepare a reviewed redline.
Use our Contract Intelligence to identify the renewal deadline and the agreement or amendment language supporting it. Check that language against the signed documents. Then research the disputed clause, verify the legal sources, and review proposed edits against your team’s playbook before approving them in GC AI for Word.
Once counsel verifies the controlling renewal deadline, use our Agent Connectors to find procurement’s latest thread, draft a response setting out the checked terms and remaining renewal decision, and prepare a follow-up task with an owner and deadline. Counsel checks the recipient, text, owner, and deadline before approving the action. This is an illustrative pilot.
Start with Needs Approval for actions that send or change data. Access depends on organization enablement, each member’s connected account, and that app’s enabled tools and permissions.
At Jasper, Hayley McAllister, Senior Counsel and Head of Commercial Legal, described building a commercial playbook from recurring issues:
I was seeing a lot of the same repetitive issues pop up in contracts, and I would have it draft me sample comments.
Those comments became a starting point for the playbook. In your pilot, compare generated comments with approved positions before using them in negotiations.
Which Should Your Team Choose?
If the need is primarily contract intake, approvals, signatures, and repository management, evaluate Ironclad's CLM and the AI products included in the quote.
We recommend evaluating GC AI when counsel needs to verify contract terms, research a legal question, and turn the findings into a reviewed redline or response to the business. Test the same completed matter in both products and compare counsel’s corrections, implementation work, and full cost. For a detailed platform comparison, see GC AI vs. Ironclad.
