Background

Hayley was brought on to help strengthen Jasper’s commercial legal capabilities. Her day-to-day work focuses heavily on contracting. “I head up our commercial legal department. I negotiate all of our go-to-market contracts on the sell side, and I do all of our vendor contracts too. That’s probably 75% of my time.”

As Jasper completed its transition into a B2B business, her role included creating the resources and processes needed to support that shift, from developing playbooks to thinking through the company’s legal positions. “We’re pretty much all B2B now… so I spent the better part of the first few months getting all that up to speed.”

Because Jasper is an AI-forward company that encourages employees to use AI for productivity in their workflows, she began exploring AI tools early. A colleague introduced her to GC AI while it was still in beta. “I started using GC AI pretty early, and now I can’t live without it,” Hayley stated.

The Challenge

Supporting Jasper’s commercial work required a legal approach that was both practical and aligned with the needs of cross-functional teams. As an in-house attorney, Hayley emphasizes balancing legal considerations with business realities. “I am a business person that just happens to work in legal,” she said. Her job involves assessing risk, determining what matters most for the business, and helping internal partners move deals forward confidently.

She needed a tool that matched that in-house mindset and could help her communicate clearly, prioritize effectively, and work through nuanced legal issues without slowing down the business. Precision in redlining, clarity in drafting comments, and the ability to quickly explain positions across teams were all critical to her work.

The Solution

GC AI quickly became integrated into nearly every part of Hayley’s commercial legal workflow.

Contract Review and Drafting

The GC AI Word plugin became one of her most relied-upon tools. “Once the Word plugin rolled out, I pretty much exclusively started using it for all of my redlining and contract review,” she shared. GC AI assists her in generating targeted redlines, creating comments that explain Jasper’s positions in a business-friendly way, and drafting clear, concise language when she needs to refine a provision.

The ability to use GC AI as a starting point helps her communicate more strategically. “Sometimes I will just go ahead and draft what’s in my brain as a comment… and I’ll use GC AI to refine what I’ve said, add context, and ask, ‘Did I miss anything here?’” This approach helps her move contracts forward without delays, especially when complex or repetitive issues arise.

Building Jasper’s Commercial Playbook

One of Hayley’s first major projects was developing Jasper’s commercial playbook. She used GC AI extensively to accelerate this work. “We didn’t have a playbook, so I was building it from scratch. I was seeing a lot of the same repetitive issues pop up in contracts, and I would have it draft me sample comments.” Those samples formed the foundation of Jasper’s playbook. 

An In-House Team's Best Friend

A key reason Hayley relies on GC AI is its ability to think like an in-house lawyer rather than a traditional legal technician. As she put it, “The biggest advantage of GC AI is it understands that you are trying to be more of a business person.” Instead of identifying every theoretical issue, it helps her focus on the risks that truly matter to Jasper’s operations and customers.

She often prompts GC AI to take on the tone and perspective she needs in negotiations. “Sometimes I’ll say, you’re a savvy legal negotiator and you’re business practical, and it understands.” That ability to shift into a practical, stakeholder-friendly mindset helps her draft comments and explanations that resonate across sales, product, and finance.

This is also where she sees the largest difference between GC AI and other AI tools. Jasper had tried a separate playbook-driven redlining product, but its output wasn’t the same. “That product felt like purely a tool,” she said, noting that it would apply blanket strikes or wholesale rewrites without considering nuance. GC AI, in contrast, adapts to context, works with existing language, inserts redlines surgically, and reasons through the gray areas. “GC AI feels like having an assistant or another brain that I can dialogue with, and with redlining, it does a much better job if I say, ‘let’s work with what’s already there and be a little more surgical.’”

For Hayley, that business-practical reasoning combined with its conversational tone and ability to engage thoughtfully with complex issues is what makes GC AI an essential part of her daily work.

Faster Legal Research and Fact-Checking

GC AI also supports her legal research, particularly for data protection and regulatory matters. “I know I can go to the GDPR and look it up, but it’s so much faster if I have it cite it for me. What might take me 20 minutes now takes five.” The ability to validate positions instantly helps her move quickly while maintaining complete confidence in accuracy.

The Results

GC AI has significantly increased Hayley’s efficiency. She repeatedly describes the time savings as transformative. “What used to take me an hour now takes me 10 minutes.” 

The tool has also expanded her personal productivity and capacity. “GC AI has enabled me to do the work of four people,” she said. By accelerating routine tasks, GC AI allows her to focus on broader commercial projects, have time to tackle projects which have been stuck in the backlog, and stay aligned with internal partners across the business.

Hayley also believes GC AI has helped improve her writing and communication. “Even from a drafting perspective, I think it has improved my writing. I know people might shudder at that because they assume AI drafts are full of em dashes or obviously AI-written, but I don’t really find that to be the case with GC AI,” she said, noting that the tool helps her express complex legal ideas in clearer, more stakeholder-friendly language. This has supported her ability to work effectively with teams throughout Jasper. “It has made me a better attorney.”

Reflecting on the role GC AI plays in her daily work, she summarizes its value simply:
“It’s the in-house counsel partner you didn’t know you needed, but now you can’t live without.”
